*This recipe makes 3 liters of horchata
- 2 liters water + 2 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 liters of ice cubes
- 1 cup rice
- 1 (14oz) can condensed milk
- 1 (12oz) can evaporated milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 stick cinnamon
Optional:
- 1 shot of Rum per 8 oz cup of horchata
Equipment:
- Blender
Steps:
- Clean your rice by rinsing it through a strainer
- Heat up 2 cups of water in the the microwave for about 30 seconds
- Add your clean rice into the warm water
- Let mixture rest for a minimum or 10 minutes
- Drain the water out of the rice and place rice into a blender
- Add your condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon into the blender
- Blend until well combined
- Strain the mixture into a pitcher (you want it to be big enough to hold 3 liters of horchata)
- Take the remains from the strainer and place it back into the blender
- Add a portion of the 2 liters of water and blend again (if your blender doesn’t blend as well you may need to repeat this one more time)
- Strain the blended mixture into the pitcher again
- Add remaining 2 liters of water into the pitcher
- Add the ice cubes to chill, and mix to combine
- At this point the horchata will be grainy and gritty from the rice
- I recommend letting the mixture sit in the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes to chill and to allow the rice to settle to the bottom
- Enjoy!
- Optional: If you’re over 21 mix in some rum into your drink to make a delicious rumchata.
